Jewish Leadville
Leadville, CO, boasted - for several decades at the end of the 19th century - the largest and most prosperous Jewish community in the state.
Its members included David May, founder of the nationally recognized May Company Department Stores; Wolf Londoner, future mayor of Denver; and Joseph Monheimer, Lake County Commissioner.
In May 2013, Radio Chavura interviewed Bill Korn (pictured left), the world's foremost expert on the Jewish community in Leadville.
Mr. Korn, who also organizes the annual "Hebrew Cemetery" cleanup with B'nai B'rith and spearheaded the effort to renovate the Temple Israel synagogue building, is a gracious host for any individual or family wishing to visit Leadville and discover its Jewish heritage. Just let him know when you're coming and he'll be happy to give you a tour of the synagogue and cemetery.
Bill also manages an amazingly comprehensive website about old Jewish Leadville at www.jewishleadville.org. Please visit it and donate to the Temple Israel Foundation. Bill can be reached at (719) 486-3625.
